We
bought our Bay in September of last year and christened him Heinz. He is a right
hand drive 1972 change over, tin-top model giving us a little of both worlds.
He is our first and most likely only camper as we both fell for him instantly
and is now a member of the family. He
was subject to a total ground-up, glass out, bare metal restoration 6 years ago
with the underside completely sealed and all cavities/internal panels waxoyled
which we are currently re-doing. He has been sensibly lowered and has white Empi
alloy wheels with 195/50 tyres and an alloy side step.

The
engine is a Vege 1600cc, with Bosch 009 distributer, electronic ignition, twin
ICT 34 Weber carbs and Monza four tip exhaust. The engine also has some chrome
dress up items and a modified sump for easier oil changes. In the engine compartment
is also a Yuasa 115Amp-hour leisure battery charged via a split relay charging
system which supplies the lighting, heating, stereo and 600Watt inverter.
Internally
is a fully refurbished full width Westfalia Rock n Roll bed and, overhead unit
however, we are currently debating how to maximise the remaining space as we fully
intend to use him to meet our camping and travelling needs and not as show piece.
This is aided by an Eberspacher D2 diesel heater which kept us nice and warm whilst
camping at the end of September last year although it did wake up half the camp-site
at the same time, luckily it didn't need to stay on for long!
As
with all VW's he does need a little TLC we are considering replacing the indicators
(currently micro-flashers) with the original units, which we already have and,
reinstating the rubber step ups on the bumper, the holes for which have been filled
when the bumper was de-seamed. The floor covering will be replaced along with
the vinyl door cards, bed cover and new curtains when the funds become available. We
look forward to getting him up together and joining you all 'out there.'
